Digital Pathology Diagnostics

The Section for Digital Pathology Diagnostics (DPD) at Columbia University Pathology is responsible for implementing and supporting the Department's deployment of digital imaging for clinical applications, including primary diagnosis. The DPD was established in 2024 through a cross-campus initiative supported by NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and in partnership with Weill Cornell Medicine’s Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
As part of this medical center-wide initiative, the Section uses several whole slide imagers for at-scale bright field imaging, which allows our world-class pathologists to view these images in a secure, patient-centered image management system. The DPD closely works with other elements within Anatomic Pathology -- including histology, immunohistochemistry and our various sub-specialty labs -- to ensure safe and efficient digitalization of stained-glass histology slides. In consultation with leadership, the DPD will also assist with the clinical assessment and deployment of computational tools related to digital pathology, such as AI-based tools, including those developed by our leading researchers.
Our staff hold Digital Pathology Certificates through the National Society of Histotechnology (NSH) and our protocols follow recommendations provided by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
For research related to digital pathology, refer to the Digital and Computational Pathology Lab (DCPL).
