The Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Unit of the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology performs diagnostic evaluations of specimens from the oral and maxillofacial regions. These specimens include both bony and soft-tissue lesions from adult and pediatric patients.
The unit provides a full range of diagnostic services for biopsy specimens collected at dentist and physician offices throughout the New York tristate area. Each case receives a comprehensive evaluation, including a review of medical history and pertinent radiographic images. When indicated, immunohistochemical and molecular diagnostic assessments are performed in conjunction with a routine histopathology review aimed at providing information regarding possible additional therapy and overall prognosis. In addition, we offer second-opinion consultation services, reviewing slides prepared elsewhere.
Dr. Elizabeth Philipone, Dr. Khanh Trinh and Dr. Daria Vasilyeva are fellows of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and board-certified diplomates of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. They also hold interdisciplinary appointments as associate professors of the Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Unit at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University School of Physicians & Surgeons. Together, they have extensive expertise in the field and provide comprehensive diagnostic interpretations and consultations.
Drs. Philipone, Trinh and Vasilyeva are also experts in the clinical management of patients with a variety of mucosal conditions and are adept at conducting proper head and neck examinations, performing mucosal biopsies, and providing proper treatments.
