Blood Bank

  •  Components
    • The resident is the first point of contact for clinical teams seeking consultation from the transfusion medicine service.
    • Fields and responds to blood product orders from clinical teams that are not indicated by hospital standard operating procedures.
    • Consulted for massive hemorrhage protocols, suspected transfusion reactions, platelet refractoriness workups, and cross-match incompatible blood product release.
    • Completes antibody panel reports for attending review and sign-out.
  • Apheresis
    • Service includes red-cell exchange, therapeutic plasma exchange, extracorporeal photopheresis, stem-cell collection, leukodepletion, and therapeutic phlebotomy. 
    • Resident, with attending backup, evaluates requests for inpatient and outpatient apheresis procedures, as well as evaluates patients on the day of their procedures.   

Chemistry/Microbiology

  • Independent review and discussion of UPEP and SPEP gels with chemistry faculty.
  • Approval of C. diff PCR testing for specific patients.
  • Joins interdisciplinary “plate rounds” with microbiology faculty and infectious disease fellows.
  • Attends teaching conferences with microbiology faculty.
  • Coordinates send-out testing requests with chemistry faculty and core lab staff.

Hematology

  • Resident reviews pertinent history of blood smear and body fluid cytology slides flagged for abnormal cell counts or morphology from hospital core lab and reviews these slides with the hematopathology and cytology attendings and fellows.
  • Resident meets with faculty to discuss diagnosis of coagulation and red blood cell disorders.
