Research
Dr. Nuriel's primary research focus is to investigate the physiological and pathological biology of apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE4), the primary genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Dr. Nuriel's previous work has uncovered novel ways that APOE4 alters neuronal activity, endosomal-lysosomal processing, and bioenergetic regulation in AD-vulnerable brain regions. Dr. Nuriel and his team are currently working to extend these findings using a wide range of cutting-edge approaches, including multi-omics, MRI, and electrophysiology. The ultimate goal of Dr. Nuriel's research is to understand why APOE4 carriers are at an increased risk of developing AD and to identify novel treatment strategies, including both lifestyle changes and therapeutics, that can prevent or slow the development of AD in this important, at-risk population.
