Andrew M Bellizzi, MD

Profile Headshot

Overview

Andrew M Bellizzi, MD, is Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology and Director of Surgical Pathology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is an internationally recognized expert in gastrointestinal surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry, general oncopathology, and neuroendocrine tumor pathology. His academic work focuses on translating advances in molecular genetics and developmental biology into practical immunohistochemical diagnostic tools, an approach he has termed “next-generation immunohistochemistry".

He previously held faculty positions at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the University of Iowa, where he established the GI Pathology Service Line and GI Pathology Fellowship and led the expansion of the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory.

His national and international leadership roles have included Chair of the College of American Pathologists Immunohistochemistry Committee, senior author of the CAP guideline on immunohistochemical assay validation, Secretary-Treasurer of the International Society for Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Morphology, and Editor-in-Chief of Applied Immunohistochemistry & Molecular Morphology.

Research

Dr. Bellizzi’s scholarship includes diagnostic biomarker discovery and the development of practical diagnostic frameworks for tumors of uncertain lineage, carcinoma of unknown primary, and neuroendocrine neoplasia. He has also played a leading role in practice guideline development in gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine cancers and in the standardization, validation, and quality assurance of immunohistochemistry laboratory practices.
