Dr. Vivette D’Agati Named the 2020 Recipient of the Edward N. Gibbs Award in Nephrology
Dr. Vivette D’Agati, MD, Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Edward N. Gibbs Award in Nephrology. She is the first woman and the first pathologist to receive this award.
Dr. D’Agati directs one of the largest renal pathology laboratories in the country, which receives nearly 5000 kidney biopsies annually. Her major research interests are mechanisms of kidney injury in podocytopathies, immune mediated glomerulonephritis, and toxic tubulopathies. Her work in animal models has characterized mechanisms of podocyte injury in HIV-associated nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and diabetic nephropathy. In addition to her clinical practice and research, she is deeply committed to education. She has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers and 80 book chapters, and has co-edited six textbooks of renal pathology. Over the past 30 years, she has organized and co-directed the annual Columbia postgraduate course “Renal Biopsy in Medical Diseases of the Kidney”, which is attended by approximately 200 international registrants per year. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, and American Journal of Kidney Diseases. She is a member of the Association of American Physicians and served as President of the Renal Pathology Society. She has received numerous honors and awards including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Jacob Churg Award for lifetime achievement from the Renal Pathology Society.
The Edward N. Gibbs Lectureship and Award in Nephrology was established in 1901 to honor a physician in practice in the United States for best original work on the etiology, pathology, or treatment of diseases of the kidney. The distinguished honoree presents his or her research at a lecture before a broad audience of scientists and clinicians.
