Department of Pathology Diagnostic Services
Renal Pathology
The Division of Renal Pathology is specialized in the diagnosis of medical diseases of the kidney. The practice of nephropathology centers on diverse non-neoplastic disorders affecting the glomerular, tubulo-interstitial and vascular compartments.
The laboratory, which is one of the largest in the country, processes approximately 2500 renal biopsies per year (including native and allograft biopsies) from 13 states. Renal biopsies are evaluated routinely by the three modalities of light microscopy, immunofluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy.
The division is staffed by three full-time renal pathologists, Dr. Vivette D. D'Agati (Director), Dr. Glen S. Markowitz, and Dr. M. Barry Stokes.
In addition to diagnostic renal pathology, the division is actively involved in a number of research studies. Major areas of research include pathomechanisms of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, HIV-associated nephropathy, lupus nephritis and drug toxicities.
The Renal Pathology Division runs an annual postgraduate course "Renal Biopsy in Medical Diseases of the Kidney", which is now in its 29th year. The 4-day course, which is given jointly with the Division of Nephrology, provides a comprehensive update of major diagnostic entities in nephropathology, with emphasis on clinical correlations and pathogenesis. The course is the longest running CME course at Columbia University Medical Center and is attended by approximately 200 registrants from around the world.
The Division hosts a weekly in-house renal biopsy conference, as well as many conferences at referring centers in the tri-state area.
