Lung Pathology

Pulmonary pathology at Columbia includes experience with a wide variety of diagnostic material in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases and includes adult and pediatric cases.

Our group of surgical pathologists reviews neoplastic cases, and these are presented twice monthly in a Chest Tumor Board, with attendance by oncology, pulmonary medicine, radiation oncology, radiology and thoracic surgery. This approach assures that specific aspects of the patient's condition are appreciated by the different services, optimizing care.

Cases include pediatric lung disease, including congenital diseases, pulmonary hypertension and interstitial disease.

Focusing on non-neoplastic disease, both outside slide review and in house surgical biopsies provide experience in both the common and unusual lung diseases. These cases include pulmonary infections, new onset/diagnosis of interstitial diseases, pulmonary hypertension and evaluations of patient's pathology as part of pre-lung transplant evaluation. When indicated, ancillary studies such as immunofluorescence and electron microscopy are available.

A multidisciplinary approach is used towards patient diagnosis, with close collaboration with medicine, radiology, rheumatology, and surgery. Cases are reviewed in a multidisciplinary environment in three separate conferences each month, two of which focus exclusively on non-neoplastic disease. This approach is essential to assure accurate non-neoplastic lung disease pathologic diagnosis.

The diagnostic work also fuels interest in non-neoplastic disease research, combining interests in basic science, clinical medicine, rheumatology, radiology and pathology.
