The Division of Neuropathology is responsible for the diagnosis of all
biopsies of the central and peripheral nervous system and muscle, as well as
all postmortem brain tissues. We are one of the larger Neuropathology
laboratories in the country, examining over 1600 surgical specimens per
year, including biopsies for brain tumors, infectious and inflammatory
diseases, nerve and muscle diseases, dementias, and cerebrovascular disease.
We also examine brains removed at autopsy. Many of these come from patients
who expire at CUMC, and others are from patients who had been followed by
one of our Neurology services, but die outside of the Hospital. We manage a
brain "bank" in which we store thousands of samples of post-mortem brain
tissues, largely from patients with neurodegenerative disorders, including
Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, Huntington disease, and a large number
of other, rarer disorders. These tissues are sent all over the country to
research laboratories for their work on neurodegenerative diseases.
The Neuropathology service is staffed by 6 full-time, board-certified
neuropathologists: Peter Canoll, MD,PhD, Phyllis Faust, MD, PhD, James E.
Goldman, MD, PhD, Arthur P. Hays, MD, Kurenai Tanji, MD, PhD, and Jean-Paul
Vonsattel, MD. Our faculty members have a wide variety of interests and
expertise, including nerve and muscle disease, neurodegenerative disorders,
brain tumors, and developmental conditions.
