Department of Pathology Diagnostic Services
Neuromuscular Pathology
Drs. Arthur P. Hays and Kurenai Tanji cover the neuromuscular pathology service. The service has many years of experience working closely with neurologists, internists, rheumatologists, pediatricians and other physicians, and provides detailed pathological analysis of the tissue to render a clinically meaningful diagnosis. The laboratory provides stat diagnosis by telephone or fax in patients with treatable disorders such as dermatomyositis, polymyositis, vasculitis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and other similar diseases.
The laboratory also screens muscle biopsies using histochemical methods to identify mitochondrial disorders, glycogen storage disorders, lipid storage disorders, muscular dystrophies and other inherited disorders. In appropriate cases, further biochemical and genetic analysis of muscle is performed in the Houston Merritt Clinical Research Center for Muscular Dystrophy and Related Disorders. This evaluation provides a peerless biopsy interpretation for patient management.
Recently, in addition to conventional nerve biopsy methods including teasing fiber preparation and electron microscopic examination, the laboratory has pioneered a new method for preparing and evaluating skin biopsies to detect abnormalities of epidermal nerve fibers in patients with small fiber neuropathy, which has successfully provided further insight into patient care and management.
