Department of Pathology Diagnostic Services

Histocompatibility

The Division of Immunogenetics of the Department of Pathology at The Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) is in charge of the immunologic evaluation of transplant candidates and recipients.

This evaluation comprises HLA class I and class II typing of transplant donor and recipients as well as identification of anti-HLA class I and class II antibodies in patients' circulation. A complex set of assays, based on molecular, serologic, flow cytometry and biochemistry technology are used for HLA genotyping and antibody detection.

The Division is assisting transplant physicians to monitor and treat highly sensitized patients prior to, as well as following, transplantation in order to avoid antibody-mediated rejection of organ allografts.

A centralized database containing immunologic and immunogenetic studies performed on a population of more than 10,000 recipients of solid organ allografts has been generated over the last 25 years to facilitate analysis of critical factors that may influence the outcome of the graft.
