| Gastrointestinal Pathology deals with biopsies taken by gastroenterologists and resection specimens, taken by surgeons. Biopsies are mostly endoscopic biopsies, either from the upper or lower GI tract. These are examined for inflammatory and neoplastic conditions by experts in GI pathology.
We have special expertise in the diagnosis of celiac disease and Barrett's esophagus with its complications of dysplasia and carcinoma. Outside biopsies are frequently sent for a second opinion to our division. We are part of several multiinstitutional research projects. We also accept biopsies from private doctor's offices and provide a rapid diagnosis, communicated personally in cases of complex diagnoses or cancer.
Surgical specimens from the GI tract are examined as to their primary diagnosis, i.e cancer or inflammatory disease, and the extent of disease. We are especially active in the field of tumors of the pancreas, which are increasing in frequency. |
